Sustainable logistics for Bamberg: Start of construction for the Elflein Zero Emission Logistics Unit
With the construction of our new Elflein Zero Emission Logistics Unit we are sending a strong signal for sustainable logistics on Hafenstraße in Bamberg. A future-oriented logistics facility is being built on an existing commercial site and will operate entirely without fossil fuels. This brownfield development protects valuable land resources while making efficient use of existing infrastructure.

The new logistics facility combines state-of-the-art energy and charging technologies. A large photovoltaic system generates renewable electricity on site, supplying not only the building itself but also the entire heating system. The concept is complemented by a high-performance battery storage system as well as modern charging infrastructure for electric trucks and cars.
In this way, we are creating a location consistently focused on climate-friendly operations and paving the way for zero-emission freight transport.
The Elflein Zero Emission Logistics Unit stands for:
- Brownfield development instead of additional land sealing
- Fossil-free heat supply
- Renewable energy generation via a photovoltaic system
- Optimized self-consumption through battery storage
- Charging infrastructure for zero-emission logistics
- Future-proof and sustainable flows of goods
With this project, we are actively shaping the transition towards climate-friendly logistics — in Bamberg and beyond.

Groundbreaking ceremony for the Elflein Zero Emission Logistics Unit in Bamberg.
An existing commercial site is being transformed into a place where modern logistics, sustainable energy and regional strength come together. Upon completion, the new logistics hall will be handed over to HDE Logistik GmbH — the powerful group of companies consisting of Herbst, Dümler and Elflein.
The project represents the responsible use of existing commercial space through a so-called “brownfield” development and sends a clear signal for energy efficiency with its 750 kWp photovoltaic system. The system will generate around 750,000 kWh of clean electricity per year — enough to power up to six e-trucks in daily operation.
Together with the Lord Mayor of Bamberg, Andreas Starke, the second Mayor of Bamberg, Jonas Glüsenkamp, Matthias Kienbaum (Managing Director of Matthias Kienbaum Bau-Projekt GmbH), Stefan Kammerer (HDE Managing Director), Alexander Zeiger (Branch Manager of Bayernhafen GmbH & Co. KG) and Rüdiger Elflein (Managing Partner of Elflein), we broke ground on Friday, December 05, 2025 marking the start of this forward-looking project.
A special moment that demonstrates how regional partnership can drive courage, innovation and sustainable progress. We're looking forward to the next steps.
